Survey Shows 44% of Londeners Victimized by ID Thieves
Monday, April 26th, 2010According to ComputerWeekly.com, an Infosecurity Europe survey shows that 44% of Londoners have been victims of bank card fraud and 42% have had their identity stolen.
The survey revealed that the average amount stolen was £1,448 per victim, and 37% never got their money back from the bank. Those who lost smaller amounts were less likely to get their money back than those who lost larger amounts.
Some 60% blamed retailers for making them vulnerable to fraud, while only 12% blamed the banks, and 28% blamed themselves.
How were their identities stolen? More than a quarter said their details had been stolen through websites or email, while a fifth said they lost their details during face-to-face transactions. Phone scams accounted for 15% of stolen identities. Other ways that people had their information stolen included were taken included ATM machines, online banking and letters being intercepted in the mail.
