Protect Your ID when You Move
Thursday, March 31st, 2011Hundreds of thousands of homeowners fail to tell banks, credit card companies, insurers, and utility firms they’re moving, putting themselves at risk for identity theft. If your mail contains personal information, it’s very easy for it to fall into the wrong hands.
The United Kingdom’s Royal Mail‘s redirection service found that 23% of movers took several days to tell their credit card provider they had moved. One in five people failed to tell their bank, 20% forgot to inform their insurance company, and 21% didn’t contact their local council.
If you’re planning to move in the future, start paying attention to the companies that send you mail regularly. Keep a list and be sure to inform them when you move.
